VW Combi, James Cook, Kepler… the vehicles that forged the legend of Westfalia
The history of Westfalia is closely linked to that of iconic vehicles that have not only left their mark on the automotive industry, but also created a new way of life: vanlife. From the legendary Volkswagen Combi to modern innovations like the James Cook or the Ford Kelsey, these vehicles are much more than just means of transport: they are symbols of a new-found freedom and a life on the move. Let’s take a look back at the models that have shaped Westfalia’s identity and continue to inspire new generations of travellers.
The Volkswagen Combi: the birth of a legend
The VW Combi is without doubt Westfalia’s most iconic vehicle. It all began in 1951 when Westfalia decided to transform a simple Volkswagen van into a complete leisure vehicle, meeting the needs of the adventurers of the time.
The result was the brand’s first combi van, equipped with a sofa bed, a fold-down table, a bench seat and distinctive checked fabrics. This model, known as the “Camping Box”, was an instant success in Europe and the United States, quickly becoming the vehicle of choice for outdoor enthusiasts and combi surfers on the beaches of California.
The following years saw the development of several versions of Westfalia combi, including the T1, T2, T3 and T4. Each of these versions brought its share of innovations, reinforcing Westfalia’s reputation as a manufacturer of camper vans combining comfort, practicality and robustness. Today, these models of yesteryear are among the most sought-after in the world, often selling for far more than their original value.
The James Cook: the modern explorer
In 1976, Westfalia introduced a new model that would also become a legend: the James Cook. Inspired by the adventurous spirit of the eighteenth-century explorer, this vehicle is based on a Mercedes van and offers innovations that were unheard of at the time, such as a fully integrated shower room. The James Cook combines safety, comfort and advanced features, making it ideal for long journeys with complete autonomy.
The James Cook quickly became a flagship model within the Westfalia range, appreciated for its versatility and comfort. For 2019, this model is making a comeback in the Westfalia collection, with three available variants: original high roof, pop-up roof, or high roof. The James Cook is the embodiment of Westfalia’s shift towards increasingly comfortable and innovative vehicles while remaining true to the pioneering spirit for which the brand is renowned.
Multifunctional vehicles: Joker, Sven Hedin and beyond
The 70s and 80s also saw the emergence of multi-purpose vehicles such as the Joker and the Sven Hedin. Launched in 1978, the Joker quickly became the ‘multi-purpose vehicle’ par excellence, used in everyday life as well as for adventures in the great outdoors. It was so successful that 70,000 of them were sold in a decade.
The Sven Hedin, introduced in 1977, was the first motorhome to be fitted with a shower, a hot water system and a raised roof.
These revolutionary models not only strengthened Westfalia’s position in the leisure vehicle market, but also helped popularise the concept of the mobile home.
Westfalia heritage today
Today, Westfalia continues to innovate, building on the heritage of these legendary vehicles. The Volkswagen Combi remains a timeless symbol of freedom and independence, while the new generation of models such as the James Cook based on a Mercedes van, the new Kelsey or the Club Joker Urban perpetuate the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterises the brand.
Westfalia vehicles are more than just means of transport: they are travelling companions that have left their mark on generations of travellers, and that continue to rewrite the history of travel in converted vehicles.
